Tabby was three when her father left for the war, and her memories of him are fractured. “I can remember someone standing in a room and canvas bags pilling up, which must have been his equipment to go to Korea, but I can’t see his face,” she says

”My work explores a twilight world that exists somewhere between memory and dream – a realm inhabited by fragmented, half-glimpsed figures

I’m drawn to imagery from the past, particularly the era of my childhood and the years immediately preceding it: a fleeting period that, for me, is imbued with innocence, longing, magic, and melancholy.

Each painting begins with a found photograph that, for reasons I cannot always explain, resonates deeply with me. Once I’ve selected an image, I begin the process of uncovering its genius loci – its unique spirit or atmosphere – through a series of sketches and studies. Once these explorations reveal the essence that lies beneath the surface, I embark on the actual painting itself.

After studying art at Hornsey College and Middlesex University in London, I began my career designing record sleeves. For the past thirty years, however, I have devoted myself entirely to painting.”
